Theres been loads in the media recently about 4-5-1 or 4-4-2, and which method we should go with for the next few games. With 2 games left in the qualifying group and a handful of friendlies before the World Cup kicks off in Germany next summer it seems ridiculous to blame our crapness on the fact that we played one striker behind the other instead of alongside each other.
The players need to play with the same team, give or take a change or two, in the same system for a period of time to get use to each others movement etc. Are we now going to have to endure watching Eriksson make panic changes to try and resurrect our fortunes? I doubt it, I think he knows as well as anyone else that one more win will get us to the finals next year, and that means he is safe.
So expect more of the same. Boring boring England with our tight defence and workman like midfeild, with Becks whipping in crosses to our 2 5"5 strikers. It is a mystery why this happens, we have some of the best players in the world. Terry, Campbell, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, they are all world class but when they put on an England shirt it all go's Pete Tong.
Maybe there will be a backlash against Austria at Old Trafford on Saturday and they will bang in 5 and play brazilian style football but even if they do, it won't make any difference to what really matters, our chances of WINNING the World Cup. We should be bringing that fucker home next year because I reckon we have the best squad of players since 1990 but we won't, because we just don't cut the mustard when it comes to the big games. We can pull off a performance once in a while, but not on any consistent basis and certainly not 7 games against the best teams in the World. When push comes to shove we don't make the grade, like Frank Bruno, the country believes but alas, we are also-rans who are heroic in defeat....Losers in other words.
We will scrape through to the finals and scrape through the group stage, glide through the 2nd round against a crap team and get knocked out in the QF's by the first good side we play.
